Managed by AlphaPlus, AlphaRoute is an adult literacy online learning environment developed for the Deaf, Native, Francophone, and Anglophone streams of the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program, the publicly funded Adult Basic Education (ABE) program of the province of Ontario, Canada. AlphaRoute is unique in Canada because it does all of the following:
A learning management system that provides LBS and ABE programs with the tools to manage registration for adult literacy students and practitioners acting as mentors – optional features include recording adult literacy student profiles, conducting online adult literacy student assessment, supporting adult literacy students through online program-based practitioner-mentors A practitioner-student support system that includes shared student Word Lists, and optional fax, telephone, and email communication supports An interactive communication system that includes discussion boards, live chat, email, and online courses, and that sustains a growing online community of adult literacy students across Canada Self-correcting and practitioner-assessed learning activities created by LBS and ABE practitioners across Canada for building reading, writing, numeracy, and computer skills Video-streamed American Sign Language for guidance in the Deaf Resources area Culturally relevant content in the Native Resources area Audio and visual learning supports for activities throughout AlphaRoute Learning opportunities for adult literacy students, supporting the development of transferable computer and online learning skills, which prepare students for participation in our technological age AlphaRoute technical specifications Successful AlphaRoute use requires high-speed Internet access, Macromedia Flash, and audio capability. In offering LBS and ABE programs an online tool to complement learning program curricula and resources, AlphaRoute fits within a blended approach. AlphaRoute can be used by LBS and ABE programs to reach students at a distance and on-site within existing small groups, classrooms, and computer lab learning times.
